Sand Point Elementary PTA

Sand Point Elementary has an Inclusion Model for special education.  In an inclusion setting, support services are brought to special education students in the general education classroom. Occasionally, special education students are “pulled-out” of the general education classroom for more intensive, 1-1 academic services.  The school has several resources and support services for students.

Resource Room

The goal of our Resource program is to help each student achieve his or her academic potential.  The Resource teacher works with Sand Point’s community in the following ways:

• Supporting classroom teachers and parents by identifying potential learning, behavioral, or social/emotional issues
• Offering support, insights, and/or resources to target interventions
• Creating individual or classroom behavioral plans
• Accessing support of building and district specialists for evaluation, including the school psychologist, the speech-language pathologist (SLP), the school nurse, and/or the occupational/physical therapist (OT/PT)
• Creating and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEP’s) for students identified as needing specially designed instruction (SDI) in academic, behavioral, and/or social/emotional areas

What should you do if you think your child is struggling at Sand Point?

The first step is to talk to your child’s classroom teacher; the Resource teacher can also be present at the meeting if you wish.  You may request or be referred to a Student Intervention Team (SIT) meeting (generally held at 8:15 on Wednesday mornings) where a team of school specialists (including the principal, the school nurse, the school psychologist, and two special education teachers) can hear the history of the school concern and problem solve multiple interventions.

What should you do if you think your child needs an IEP, specially designed instruction, or special education services?

The first step is to talk to your child’s classroom teacher.  Students identified through the SIT process as needing more intensive interventions may qualify for an assessment through our school psychologist and a multi-disciplinary team (perhaps including the school nurse, the SLP, and/or the OT/PT).  Based on the findings of the assessment, the school psychologist may make a recommendation for special education services.
