One way we can all be “responsible global citizens” is to care for the environment we share with the rest of the world. Sand Point Elementary students, staff and families are taking significant steps to learn more about how we can use the earth’s resources responsibly. In order to advance our school’s environmental stewardship in meaningful ways, Sand Point Elementary has decided to partner with Washington Green Schools.
Washington Green Schools provides resources and tools to involve students, teachers, and community members in assessing and taking action to increase resource conservation and waste reduction in schools. A non-profit program, Washington Green Schools envisions that all schools in Washington state will model environmental sustainability, and students will be engaged as stewards and leaders in their schools and beyond.

How does it work?
- Washington Green Schools is organized into five levels (Levels 1-5) and five environmental categories: Energy, Healthy School Buildings, Transportation, Waste and Recycling, and Water.
- Certification at each level is achieved by choosing an environmental category for your area of focus, and completing the steps in the Certification Rubric. This includes building a Green Team, completing an assessment in the environmental category chosen, taking action to improve in the category, analyzing results of that action, and sharing the results with the greater community.
- Upon certification at each level, a school can choose to advance to the next level, or renew at the current level.
Sand Point Elementary has chosen to certify in the Waste and Recycling category and we are currently in the certification process. Below is the schedule on becoming a Washington Green School:
- April 23, 2012: Waste Audit and initial assessment
- April 23-27, 2012: Recycling education and implementation
- April 30, 2012: Cedar Grove Composting Presentation to entire school. Students will be educated about home and school composting.
- May 1-4, 2012: Sand Point students will practice composting at lunch.
- May 7, 2012: Official composting begins
- June, 2012: Final waste reduction assessment and certification as a Washington Green School
